How did you meet? How did you start dating?
We met at University orientation. Nelson didn’t want to meet anyone and gave everyone, including Tracy, a fake email address. Luckily for him, his friends were more social, and eventually we became very good friends. We didn’t start dating until a few years later, after Nelson decided to ask Tracy out over MSN Messenger because she was back at home in Stettler for the summer.
What was the most romantic thing she did / he did?
This is a difficult question because neither of us makes grand romantic gestures, but we put a lot of importance in small, everyday actions that we take. To us, it’s the flowers on birthdays and Valentine’s Day, taking the time to watch each other’s favourite movies, and stopping when it rains for a quick kiss, that make our relationship meaningful.
How did he propose? Was he romantic?
Nelson’s proposal included two very important things in Tracy’s life – her family and her hometown, Stettler. We were back in Stettler for Christmas 2012, about half a year after he moved to Edmonton for work. He made sure to ask Tracy’s parents for permission first, and included her sisters and cousin in the plan. He asked to see the big Christmas tree in the middle of Main Street with everyone, which confused Tracy because it was very cold they’d all seen that tree many times before. When they got to the tree, he bent down on one knee and proposed. After she got over her shock – and her sudden disappointment that she wasn’t wearing a very flattering winter hat – she said yes.
